For years now, I’ve been a huge advocate of proper skincare. Your skin is your biggest organ as well as your most visible, so keeping it clear and firm is essential. To take care of it before I head to bed (nighttime = skin rejuvenation time), I’ve been sticking to a somewhat lengthy but worthwhile skincare regimen. Obviously, everyone’s skin is different, but these are the steps and products that work for me.
Step 1: Makeup Remover
Always remove your makeup at the end of the day (rarely do I “sin”) because it will clog your pores and encourage premature aging. I know a lot of people don’t like to use makeup wipes just because it can feel a little rough, but for me personally, the Neutrogena Night Calming Cleansing Towelettes work really well. This version is not only gentle on the skin, but also very effective at taking all of your makeup off, including waterproof makeup. In literally no time, I can easily go from full glam to a bare face + they’re travel-friendly.
Step 2: Cleanser
Cleansing your skin is also critical in order to get rid of all the leftover residue from the first step. Also, choose one depending on your skin type. I tend to have normal to dry skin, so I have to use a cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin of too much moisture. For foam cleansers, I like to use the Too Cool For School Egg Mousse Cleanser since it’s super gentle without stripping the skin of too much moisture. I also love my Shiseido Bright Lucent Brightening Cleanser since a little goes such a long way (but it’s pretty pricey for a cleanser).
Step 3: Exfoliation
I actually don’t exfoliate everyday, and instead, do so once or twice a week. Exfoliating helps smooth and brighten the skin surface by removing dead skin cells. My favorite exfoliator is the Cure Natural Aqua Gel. It doesn’t actually contain “beads” or granules like a lot of physical exfoliators, so it’s not overly abrasive on the skin. The best part? You can actually see all of your dead skin rub off as you exfoliate – it’s both disgusting and fascinating to watch!
Step 4: Toner
Toners are great for additional prepping before applying the rest of the steps because they help other products absorb better into the skin. They also rebalance your skin’s pH make it feel very refreshed. Right now, I’m loving the Cremorlab Essence Tonic. It’s got a nice but minimal scent and does a great job and smoothing out your pores.
Step 5: Essence
Essences are super because they are usually hydrating with high concentrations of active ingredients that help treat skin on a cellular level. This is where I introduce my holy grail product: Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence. I swear, there’s some kind of magic happening inside this stuff because it does instant wonders on the skin! I kid you not that whenever I apply this essence at night, any sort of blemish that I have is noticeably less visible or even gone by the morning. A lot of people also say that it’s a cheaper, almost perfect dupe for the SKII, so that’s definitely another pro.
Step 6: Moisturizer/Oil
Whenever I need an extra boost of moisture, I layer either a thicker moisturizer or facial oil on top of everything else. One that I’ve been liking for a while is the Cetaphyl Daily Hydrating Lotion. It’s super affordable, easy to purchase at most drugstores, and great for sensitive skin as well. Another is Josie Maran’s Pure Argan Oil. I absolutely adore this oil because it just gives your skin that such a healthy glow without looking oily. Since it’s an oil, it’s definitely a little thicker than the other products but still works great as a daytime moisturizer when applied on its own.
Step 7: Eye Cream
A little overdramatic here, but one of my biggest fears is getting crows feet and other kinds of wrinkles around my eyes. Sure I’m still pretty young and don’t have to deal with too many fine lines yet, but a little prevention never hurts anyone! In fact, I think the eyes are the part you should always be the most attentive to since the skin around them is so thin. When applying anything on/near the eyes, it’s always best to use small patting motions as opposed to dragging or tugging. At the moment, I am using Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream but want to try something different. Any suggestions?
A Big Reminder
Most importantly, you must hydrate from within. Drinking tons of water and eating well has always been proven to improve your skin in the long run!
